How to check if your Hungarian vignette is valid

e-matrica.org5 min read

The Hungarian vignette is fully electronic and tied solely to the vehicle licence plate — there is no sticker on the windscreen and no document to carry. For that reason the only certain way to confirm that a vignette really applies to your car is to check it in the official NÚSZ system. The check is free, takes a moment and works the same for foreign plates as for Hungarian ones. In this guide we show where to check validity, how to do it step by step, and what it means if the vignette does not appear.

Where to check validity

You can check validity in the official lookup run by the Hungarian operator NÚSZ / Magyar Közút on the nemzetiutdij.hu portal. This is the same official system in which we, as an independent service provider (intermediary), register the vignette on the buyer’s behalf. In other words: whether you ordered the vignette directly in the official system or through our service, the result shows up in the same single database.

You only need two things to check: the vehicle licence plate and the country of registration (for example Poland or Germany). No account, password or order number is required — the validity check relies only on the plate and the country. If you still need to buy a vignette, read first how and where to do it in where and how to buy a Hungarian vignette.

The check step by step

The check itself takes less than a minute. Just go through three steps:

  • Open the official lookup for vignette validity in the NÚSZ system at nemzetiutdij.hu.
  • Enter the licence plate exactly as it appears on the registration document — no spaces and no dashes, character by character. The system matches the plate character by character, so a transposed digit or a forgotten character means that, technically, no vignette exists for that plate.
  • Select the country of registration and confirm.

The result shows the active vignettes assigned to that plate: the validity dates from–to and the vehicle category (for example D1). If you see the correct period covering the day you plan to drive and the right category, everything is in order and you can drive onto the expressway with peace of mind. It is worth checking that the start date is not set in the future and that the category matches your vehicle (if in doubt, see do I need a Hungarian vignette).

What to do if the vignette does not appear

If the check shows no active vignette, there are three common reasons in practice — and none of them necessarily means a problem:

  • You are checking too soon. After a purchase through our service the vignette is registered in the official system and the confirmation with the details is emailed to you within 2–3 minutes of payment. If you are checking right after buying, wait those few minutes and try again.
  • You are entering a different plate than at purchase. The most common error is a typo, an extra space or a dash. Enter the plate exactly as on the registration document and compare it with the plate on the email confirmation.
  • The start date is set in the future. If you chose a later start date at purchase, the vignette is not valid yet — it will show as active only from that day. This is normal and in line with your order.

Remember that you must hold the vignette before driving onto a tolled section — checking validity is a good habit just before departure, not at the entry gate (there are no gates anyway; enforcement is camera-based). If something does not add up and you ordered with us, our support is available 24/7 and will help clarify it; the confirmation with the vignette details is always in your inbox within 2–3 minutes of payment.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check for free whether I have a valid Hungarian vignette?

In the official lookup of the Hungarian NÚSZ system on the nemzetiutdij.hu portal — by licence plate and country of registration. The check is free and needs no account.

What do I need to check validity?

Only the vehicle licence plate and the country of registration (for example Poland or Germany). No password or order number is required — validity is tied solely to the licence plate.

I bought a vignette but cannot see it in the system — why?

Most often you are checking too soon (the vignette is registered and the confirmation arrives within 2–3 minutes of payment), you are entering the plate with a typo or a space, or the start date is set in the future so the vignette is not valid yet.

Is checking via an intermediary different from the official system?

No. As an independent service provider (intermediary) we register the vignette in the same official NÚSZ system, so the result appears in one shared database — regardless of where the vignette was ordered.
