Do I need a Hungarian vignette and which category to choose

e-matrica.org5 min read

On Hungarian expressways marked with the letter M a vignette is mandatory for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and for all motorhomes. Which category you buy depends on the type of vehicle — a motorcycle is one thing, a passenger car another, and a larger van or heavy motorhome yet another. Lower-category roads — main, local and city roads — are free and need no vignette. In this guide we explain who needs which category, how the special cases work (motorcycles, trucks, trailers) and exactly where the vignette applies.

Who needs a vignette and which category

The Hungarian system splits vehicles into several categories. For the vast majority of foreign drivers the right one is D1:

  • D1 — passenger car up to 3.5 t and up to 7 seats (driver included), as well as an SUV, a small van and a motorhome up to 3.5 t and up to 7 seats. This is the most common category. A one-day D1 vignette costs 7 900 Ft (≈ 20 €).
  • D1M — motorcycle — a separate, cheaper category, available only for 1 day, 10 days and a month. There is no annual D1M vignette — the annual one for a motorcycle is bought in category D1.
  • D2 — a vehicle with more than 7 seats, a van, or a motorhome over 3.5 t or with more than 7 seats — a higher tariff class.
  • U — a trailer towed behind a D2 vehicle — needs its own separate vignette.

If you are unsure whether your vehicle fits D1, use two limits: a gross weight of 3.5 t and the number of seats (up to 7 including the driver). Exceeding either moves the vehicle into D2.

Special cases

A few situations regularly cause doubt — here is how they work in Hungary:

  • Motorcycles are not exempt. They need a vignette in the D1M category. The annual vignette for a motorcycle is bought, exceptionally, in category D1 — on the form choose passenger car (D1) and the annual period.
  • Vehicles over 3.5 t (trucks, buses) do not buy a vignette. They pay through the kilometre-based HU-GO system with an on-board unit — which we do not handle.
  • The exception: motorhomes. Since 1 January 2026 all motorhomes, including those over 3.5 t, use the e-matrica (vignette), not HU-GO. A motorhome up to 3.5 t and up to 7 seats is D1; a heavier one or one with more seats is D2.
  • Trailers. A trailer towed behind a passenger car (D1) is covered by the towing vehicle’s vignette — you do not buy a separate one for it. Only a trailer behind a heavier D2 vehicle needs its own category U vignette.

Where the vignette is needed

The vignette applies only on expressways marked with the letter M — motorways and dual carriageways (including the M1 Budapest–Vienna, the M7 towards Balaton and Croatia, the M3, the M5 and the M0 ring around Budapest). All other roads — main, local and city roads — are free. In practice, however, most transit through Hungary and most approaches to Budapest, Lake Balaton or the east of the country run precisely along the M-series roads, so the vignette is usually unavoidable (more in driving without a vignette in Hungary).

Driving on an M road without a valid vignette is unauthorised road use, which carries a surcharge (pótdíj): 27 790 Ft if paid within 60 days, and 95 730 Ft after that — the same for every vehicle category. At that risk it is cheaper and simpler to just hold a vignette. Once you know which category you need, see where and how to buy a vignette or go straight to the Hungarian vignette page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a vignette in Hungary?

Yes, if you drive onto expressways marked with the letter M in a vehicle up to 3.5 t or a motorhome. Main, local and city roads are free and need no vignette.

Which vignette category should I choose?

D1 — passenger car up to 3.5 t and up to 7 seats, SUV, small van, motorhome up to 3.5 t. D1M — motorcycle (only 1 day, 10 days, a month; the annual for a motorcycle is D1). D2 — more than 7 seats, van or motorhome over 3.5 t. U — trailer behind a D2 vehicle.

Are motorcycles exempt from the vignette in Hungary?

No. Motorcycles need a vignette in the D1M category (available for 1 day, 10 days and a month). The annual vignette for a motorcycle is bought in category D1.

Does a motorhome over 3.5 t need a vignette or HU-GO?

Since 1 January 2026 all motorhomes, including those over 3.5 t, use the vignette (e-matrica), not the kilometre-based HU-GO system. A motorhome up to 3.5 t is category D1, a heavier one is D2.

Does a trailer need a separate vignette?

A trailer behind a passenger car (D1) is covered by the towing vehicle’s vignette and needs no separate one. A trailer behind a heavier D2 vehicle needs its own category U vignette.
